I can't stop fiddling, so I'm gonna call it finished for now. I may come back in a few days, with fresh eyes. I'm quite pleased with it. It is my first proper Digital Animal.

It looks like a very good start, but I can offer a few suggestions if you want the fur to look more realistic. You said that you wanted advanced critique, so I hope this isn't too much.
The fur direction looks a little strange around the right eye. The left eye looks good, but the right side, especially in the region 1/2 way to the ear, shows the fur moving in directions that it doesn't naturally grow. If you meant to have it look wind-blown, the texture is quite a bit different.
[link] is a stock image of a wolf that shows good detail on the fur of the face.
On the ears, the left again is closer to real life. If the ear is at all angled toward the viewer, you should see a dark center surrounded by fluffy fur to the inside and shorter fur on the outside. ("inside" being the side of the ear toward the middle of the wolf's head) On the right ear you put in a little too much fur detail. Fuzzier fur will give the impression of the soft, down-like fur that protects the ears.
There are many other details I could point out, so if you want more feedback, just let me know.
btw, is this supposed to be a wolf, or a dog? It makes a difference on many of the details.
Mmmmmm? Where to begin?
I do know which direction the fur grows in.
If you look at my ref: photo, [link] , which is more detailed than your link, you will see that there are some exceptions to the norm. Same applies with the ear.
I'm not even going to answer the wolf/dog question.
I'm glad you found so 'many' faults with this obviously flawed pic.
I hadn't seen that photo and didn't realize you had a reference photo you were working from. Had I realized that, I would have commented far differently. Your drawing is extremely true to the original photo, and that canine is very unusual-looking. I would guess some sort of a wolf hybrid(?), maybe, but regardless he is definitely a unique individual.
After seeing the photo, I don't think there is anything I could offer to improve this drawing. The only thing I would suggest is making a link to the reference in the description even though it is one of your own photos.
I'll look at the species name next time I go to the Zoo. The Zoo specialises in rare and highly endangered breeds.
He may just be old. This Zoo is reknowned world wide for its good work with lesser known variants.
Check this out... [link] and this... [link] If you thought the Wolf had weird hair? It's a Barbary Lion. I'd never heard of it before I went here, like so many of the species. It has opened my eyes, even more.
PS: Did you really think that I could do all that, without a ref: photo? And with sooooooooo many faults, hehe.
Seen the second one. I thought that was hilareous! Which zoo exactly are you going to? I watch lots of photographers that visit zoos, and I can't keep it straight which goes where.....
And yes, I did think you had drawn it without a direct reference. Feel free to stop me if you think I'm giving you too much credit.
fantastic work! i can't beleive how real it seems. it looks as though i could reach out and touch it's fur and feel how soft and plushy it is! what a gorgeous animal. you did a great job here. i couldn't say more

It don't matter, if you don't criticise. It's not obligiatory
